Went to see Kooza, by Cirque du Soleil, in Baltimore

Cirque du Soleil - Kooza

Today I went down to Baltimore with a group of friends to catch the 4pm show of Kooza, by Cirque du Soleil, under the Grand Chapiteau at M&T Bank Stadium. The show was about 3 hours long with a 30 minute intermission. All of the performers were phenomenal; the three contortionists, the unicycle duo, the chair balancing act, the dancers, the music…. everything! I think it was the Wheel of Death that had everyone on the edge of their seat though (or cringing and covering their eyes) — I could feel the tension and suspense of everyone else around me.

Kooza is in Baltimore until April 5th but if you can’t catch the show, they’ll be up in New York, NY starting April 16th. What a great excuse for a long weekend in NYC! Visit the Kooza website for show information and tickets.

And finally, thank you to my friends Jason and Jim at Innovative for the tickets!

The Facebook Generation vs. the Fortune 500

posted by Scott on March 27th, 2009

The following is an entry by Gary Hamel of the Wall Street Journal.

The experience of growing up online will profoundly shape the workplace expectations of “Generation F” – the Facebook Generation. At a minimum, they’ll expect the social environment of work to reflect the social context of the Web, rather than as is currently the case, a mid-20th-century Weberian bureaucracy.

If your company hopes to attract the most creative and energetic members of Gen F, it will need to understand these Internet-derived expectations, and then reinvent its management practices accordingly. Sure, it’s a buyer’s market for talent right now, but that won’t always be the case—and in the future, any company that lacks a vital core of Gen F employees will soon find itself stuck in the mud.

With that in mind, I compiled a list of 12 work-relevant characteristics of online life. These are the post-bureaucratic realities that tomorrow’s employees will use as yardsticks in determining whether your company is “with it” or “past it.” In assembling this short list, I haven’t tried to catalog every salient feature of the Web’s social milieu, only those that are most at odds with the legacy practices found in large companies.

You’ve got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker!

Slacker

For years, I’ve been listening to various forms of online radio while I work. Shoutcast, Launch, Live365, Last.FM, Pandora, Sirius/XM are a few of the more popular services that I’ve used and I’ve given several others a fair test run. My main source of online radio for the past two years has been through a service called Slacker.

“Slacker is a free personalized radio service featuring over 100 expert-programmed genre stations and the ability to create your own perfect stations. To get started, pick your favorite type of music or search for your favorite artist or song.”

A couple of reasons I prefer this service over all of the others that I’ve tried…

  • It’s free, but there is also a cheap, premium service that unlocks more features.
  • It has a web player which plays in your browser, but there is also a desktop application, as well as mobile apps for your iPhone or Blackberry.
  • Music is cached for uninterrupted music playback. If you’re getting on the subway or the metro with the Slacker G2 or an iPhone or Blackberry running the app, you don’t have to worry about your connection being disrupted.
  • Pleny of features that let you fine tune your station, with the best recommendation engine I’ve seen in any service.
  • You can share your stations with your friends.
  • There is a portable player out called the Slacker G2, which allows you to take your stations with you to the gym or to play in the car.
  • If you use Last.FM, there is an app called LastSlacker that will scrobble your songs for you.

Try it out for yourself and send me a link to your station!

Using LinkedIn can benefit your organization

Tim and I met up with a colleague at Skyline Coffee Co. this afternoon to discuss partnering up on some upcoming projects. At some point we started talking about the economy and new ways to reach out and help the people that have recently lost their jobs and need help with bills, food, etc. As she sifted through her thoughts of how her church could help, she decided to post something on LinkedIn to see if she could get some fresh ideas. She was blown away with the quality and quantity of the responses! People from around the world gave her some really fantastic ideas, and here’s the kicker… it didn’t cost her a thing!

LinkedIn is more than just a social networking site where you add connections. If you give it a little bit of time and attention, you can use it as a tool to promote you and your business. With that said, here are a few quick tips to help you get started.

2009 Washington County Business Awards

Last night I attended the Washington County Business Awards and had a great time. The group I was with squeezed our way through a packed crowd at Duffy’s and made our way upstairs to the Ballroom where we got a table, dined and talked with colleagues and friends. Afterwards, we walked across the street to the Maryland Theatre for the awards ceremony and after the big event, people gathered back at Duffy’s, Bulls & Bears and Schmankerl Stube for dessert, drinks and fun.

Without further ado, here are your winners:

At You Service Award: Wright-Gardner Insurance

Going Green Award: Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Non-Profit Impact Award: Leadership Washington County

Small Business Award: Custom Machine

Vision Award: Bowman Development Corp.

Washington County Business Person of the Year Award: Donald M. Bowman
